The Manor at Seneca Hill is home to Oswego Health’s skilled nursing facility and short-term rehabilitation program and recently marked 25 years of caring for the community.

Before The Manor, Oswego Hospital had a dedicated 38 beds on the 2nd floor, specific to those needing long-term care, and also offered short-term rehab and activities on the 3rd floor. With a growing aging population in Oswego County and the need for additional medical-surgical beds at the Hospital, the team decided to invest in building a 120-licensed-bed skilled nursing facility. On March 1, 1999, residents transitioned from Oswego Hospital and The Manor became their forever home.

Three employees who recall the transition and move are Rose Flynn, LPN, Karen Stevens, and Theresa Durgan, CNA. The three have spent their careers in long-term care, and are beyond passionate about geriatrics.

“I’ll never forget moving our first resident over to The Manor,” shared Admissions Director, Rose Flynn, LPN. Flynn started with Oswego Hospital in 1988 and has spent her career in long-term care. “It was certainly scary at first, transitioning out of the hospital and to Seneca Hill, however, failure was never an option. Our team does everything we can to make our residents feel at home. We treat them like family.”

The quality and care at The Manor at Seneca Hill is something all employees are passionate about. Earning a 5-star quality rating and a 5-star rating overall from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), care remains one of the best in Central New York, and Theresa Durgan, CNA, prides herself on these standards.

Starting at Oswego Hospital in 1990, Durgan shares, “I love my job and I could never imagine being anywhere else. It’s an honor to be able to care for these residents knowing they are someone’s parents or grandparents. It just makes the job we do here at The Manor that much more personal.”

At this skilled nursing facility with 120 licensed beds, residents enjoy a homelike environment with spacious, private, or semi-private furnished rooms. Residents' healthcare needs are met by an interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, therapeutic recreation specialists, and nutritional services. Physician services—including specialists, such as podiatry, dental, eye care, and psychological services—are provided to residents on an as-needed basis or by request.

In 2023 The Manor had 458 admissions and 462 discharges.

Karen Stevens, Lead Receptionist, will soon be an employee who will be retiring later in 2024. Stevens started at Oswego Hospital in 1980 and as she reflects on the last 25 years, she simply stated, “We walked in when the doors first opened at The Manor and we’ll exit when it’s time to retire.”

Another special person in the history of The Manor is Lisa Backus. Backus has volunteered since the doors first opened in 1999.
