Oswego Health Recognizes MRI Safety Week and Celebrates Local MRI Safety Champion

Oswego Health is proud to recognize July 20–26 as MRI Safety Week, a national observance that highlights the vital role MRI technologists play in ensuring patient safety and preventing MRI-related injuries. This week not only raises awareness about the importance of MRI safety but also gives healthcare organizations across the country an opportunity to acknowledge the professionals on the front lines of imaging care.
At Oswego Health, MRI safety is more than a checklist—it’s a commitment. The MR technologists are highly trained experts who combine technical precision with compassion, ensuring every scan is performed with the highest standard of care. As the use of MRI technology continues to evolve, so do the responsibilities of the imaging team, who remain steadfast in their mission to protect patients and staff from potential risks.
This year, Oswego Health is especially proud to recognize Sabrina Ervin, RT (R)(MR), MRSO, as a true champion of MRI safety. Sabrina recently earned her MRI Safety Officer (MRSO) certification, a prestigious and rigorous credential now recommended by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This milestone is not just a professional achievement for Sabrina—it’s a game-changer for the entire organization.
To earn this certification, Sabrina completed an intensive, week-long course in Florida led by world-renowned MRI safety expert Dr. Emanuel Kanal and dedicated months to studying complex safety protocols. She officially passed her boards in April, becoming the only certified MRSO at Oswego Health. Her expertise ensures we are compliant with the latest industry recommendations, particularly regarding implant safety, emergency procedures, and staff education.
“With Sabrina leading the way, we’re actively implementing a formal MRSO program here at Oswego Health, aligning our practices with the most up-to-date national standards,” said Oswego Health’s Vice President of Ancillary Services, David Ruel. “Her passion and dedication to MRI safety enhances our overall commitment to quality care and patient protection.”
