Oswego Health Medical Practice Welcomes James Sexton, MD, Expanding Pulmonary & Critical Care Services to Meet Growing Community Need
Oswego Health Medical Practice is pleased to welcome James Sexton, MD, a highly experienced, board-certified pulmonologist and critical care physician, to its Pulmonary & Critical Care Clinic. Dr. Sexton’s arrival expands the clinic to three physicians, further strengthening access to advanced pulmonary and critical care services for patients throughout Central New York. Since opening in August at the Oswego Hospital campus, the clinic has addressed a growing community need by providing specialized respiratory and critical care close to home, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region.
Dr. Sexton brings more than three decades of experience in pulmonary and critical care medicine, academic leadership, and hospital-based practice. Most recently, he has served as a locum tenens pulmonary and ICU physician across New York and the Northeast, caring for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. From 1998 to 2020, he was an Associate Professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he also served for more than 20 years as Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program and as Medical Director of the Community General Hospital ICU from 2010 to 2019. During his tenure, Dr. Sexton played a key role in numerous quality, safety, and clinical initiatives, including pulmonary hypertension care, sepsis management, ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention, and ICU governance.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sexton served as Chair of the Critical Care Task Force, overseeing ICU operations and coordination across nine intensive care units as part of the system’s pandemic response. He has an extensive background in medical education, having taught medical students, residents, and fellows throughout his career, and he completed his fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at University Hospitals and MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He also holds a Master’s degree in Health Services Research from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Sexton is board certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Internal Medicine.
Dr. Sexton joins Girish Trikha, MD, and Rohini Singh Chatterjee, MD, MS, forming a comprehensive Pulmonary & Critical Care team with decades of combined experience across academic medicine, military and civilian healthcare systems, and complex ICU environments. Together, the physicians provide outpatient pulmonary care and collaborate closely with Oswego Hospital’s Hospitalist team and 24/7 ICU Telemedicine Services to deliver inpatient consultation and management for critically ill patients across the Oswego Health system.
The Pulmonary & Critical Care Clinic diagnoses, treats, and manages a broad range of conditions, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep apnea, pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, sarcoidosis, bronchiectasis, and work-related lung diseases. Services include pulmonary function testing (PFT), CPAP/BiPAP therapy management, smoking cessation programs, oxygen therapy coordination, and bronchoscopy referrals.
