This month’s Provider Spotlight shines on Dr. Jeffrey DeSimone, a board-certified bariatric surgeon with the Center for Weight Loss & Surgery, whose compassion, curiosity, and dedication have helped countless patients regain their health and confidence. Known for his approachable personality and genuine care, Dr. DeSimone treats every patient like family—listening, encouraging, and celebrating every success along their journey.
THE PROFESSIONAL SIDE
Dr. DeSimone’s path to medicine began with an engineering mindset. A graduate of L.C. Smith College of Engineering at Syracuse University, he went on to earn his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine before returning to Central New York to complete his internship, residency, and fellowship at the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse. Today, as a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, he brings more than two decades of surgical experience and a reputation for skillful precision and heartfelt care to the patients he serves.
WHY BARIATRICS?
Believe it or not, bariatrics wasn’t always part of Dr. DeSimone’s plan. Over 20 years ago, when a hospital CEO approached him about the growing field of weight loss surgery, he politely declined—at first. But after digging deeper, he realized how perfectly his advanced laparoscopic training aligned with the specialty. More importantly, he recognized how transformative this work could be for patients. What began as hesitation became passion, and today, Dr. DeSimone and his partners are proud to have helped change hundreds of lives through bariatric surgery.
WHY OSWEGO HEALTH
Splitting his time between Oswego Health and Crouse, Dr. DeSimone says what drew him here was simple: community. Having grown up in the small town of Keeseville, NY, just outside Plattsburgh, he feels right at home in Oswego County’s close-knit environment.
“It’s like a good old-fashioned episode of Cheers,” he says with a smile.
He knows that in smaller communities, access to specialized care can be limited—and he’s determined to change that. For him and his team, expanding bariatric care locally isn’t just about convenience—it’s about compassion.
OUTSIDE THE CLINIC & OR
When he’s not in surgery, Dr. DeSimone’s life is full of rhythm, family, and adventure. He and his wife are avid ballroom dancers, often spending evenings perfecting their waltz or tango. They also share a love for wine, and while he doesn’t make it himself, Dr. DeSimone is currently studying to become a sommelier—a journey that’s taken him to vineyards in Napa Valley and Italy.
The couple enjoys antique hunting, restoring unique finds from estate sales and auctions. Family is at the heart of everything he does—he has four sons, two grandchildren, and enjoys Sunday gatherings with the three who live locally. In the fall, you’ll find him cheering on The Philadelphia Eagles, and when the weather’s right, he and his wife love getting outdoors on their e-bikes, exploring with ease and fresh air.
