Oswego Health Introduces AI-Powered Test to Predict Esophageal Cancer Risk

Oswego Health is proud to announce the latest advancement at our Center for Gastroenterology & Metabolic Diseases: TissueCypher®, an innovative diagnostic tool powered by artificial intelligence that helps predict the risk of developing esophageal cancer in patients with Barrett’s esophagus (BE).

This cutting-edge test, implemented under the leadership of Dr. Mohammad Fahad Ali, Chief of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Director of Endoscopy, represents a major step forward in personalized, evidence-based care.

What Is Barrett’s Esophagus?

Barrett’s esophagus is a condition in which the lining of the esophagus changes, often due to long-term acid reflux. While BE itself isn’t cancerous, it can increase a patient’s risk for developing esophageal adenocarcinoma—a serious form of cancer that can be difficult to detect in its early stages.

How TissueCypher® Works

TissueCypher® uses artificial intelligence to analyze biopsy samples from patients with Barrett’s esophagus at the cellular and molecular levels. The test then provides a personalized five-year risk score, identifying which patients are most likely to progress to cancer. Best of all, this is done using existing biopsy tissue, so no additional procedures are needed.

Why This Matters

Early detection is key in preventing the progression of esophageal cancer. With TissueCypher®, our team can identify high-risk patients sooner and tailor surveillance and treatment plans to each individual’s needs—potentially saving lives in the process.

“This technology allows us to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach,” said Dr. Ali. “It’s another way we’re bringing world-class, high-quality care to patients right here in our community.”

A Commitment to Innovation

At Oswego Health, we are committed to investing in tools and technologies that elevate patient care and expand access to advanced diagnostics. The addition of TissueCypher® to our Gastroenterology services highlights that promise—and reflects our mission to care for what matters most: you.
