Healing Hearts and Inspiring Young Minds: Dr. Bass’ Journey from Cardiologist to Children’s Author

At Oswego Health’s Center for Cardiology, David Bass, DO, FACC is known for his tireless commitment to heart health. But there’s more to Dr. Bass than meets the eye. Outside the clinic, he’s a children’s book author, bringing messages of courage, healthy habits, and kindness to life through storytelling.

In 2021, Dr. Bass published Super Sammy Saves the Day, a comic-style children’s book starring a young superhero who takes on a gang of junk food-loving raccoons that are bullying kids into eating unhealthy foods. With a plate full of veggies and a heart full of courage, Super Sammy saves the day—reminding kids that eating healthy isn’t just important, it’s cool.

The story was inspired by Dr. Bass’ own son, Sammy, who appears as the book’s main character.

“The feedback from kids has been incredible,” says Dr. Bass. “They’re telling me eating healthy is cool—and that’s music to my ears.”

The book has found its way into school libraries across Central New York and into the hands of parents looking for fun, meaningful ways to encourage healthy habits at home.

But Dr. Bass isn’t stopping there. He’s already working on his second book, inspired by his daughter, centered on the power of positive speech—a message every child can benefit from.

As a physician, father, and now author, Dr. Bass is proving that there’s more than one way to help shape a healthier future. Sometimes, it starts not in the exam room—but in the pages of a storybook.
