Oswego Health will celebrate National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week from April 22nd to 28th. This annual celebration recognizes medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care. As part of Oswego Health’s celebration, Oswego City Mayor Bill Barlow declared the week as Medical Laboratory Week in Oswego.
Oswego Health employs more than 82 highly trained laboratory personnel, who diligently perform more than two million tests each year. Among the most common are a complete blood count, basic and comprehensive metabolic profiles, lipids, liver, kidney and thyroid function testing, urinalysis, coagulation studies, hemoglobin A1C, cultures, Pap Tests and surgical histology preparations.
The departments of microbiology, chemistry, pathology, hematology, blood bank, phlebotomy and central receiving form Oswego Hospital’s state-of-the-art laboratory. This advanced department features the latest instrumentation and automation improving the department’s efficiencies and testing turn-around time. In chemistry, an automated system moves specimens along a track stopping them at stations where specific tests on that sample need to be performed. A pneumatic tube system transports specimens to the laboratory from other hospital departments including the emergency room, oncology suite and blood draw station in the Health Services Center located adjacent to the hospital.
Oswego Hospital’s laboratory services are not limited to the main hospital. There are 13 lab collection sites located throughout the community in Oswego, Fulton, Mexico, Phoenix, Hannibal, Pulaski and Parish that include the Central Square and Fulton Medical Centers, making laboratory testing convenience to home and work.
Community members interested in taking part in one of the lab’s multi-organ blood analysis events can now register for an appointment online 24 hours a day for any of the four locations by visiting oswegohealth.org/bloodanalysis.
The blood draw events will be held the mornings of May 12 at the Pulaski Health Center; June 2nd at the G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton; August 4th at Oswego’s Leighton Elementary School; and on Sept. 15th at the Central Square Medical Center.
